  1. The reason I stop taking Gardenia bread is because of the artificial preservative. This is a good news for me. Could you post the ingredient of the natural preservative in use now. Thanks.

    • Thanks Jing Wen. The natural preservatives used for our bread is the Raisin Juice Concentrate and Vinegar. Other factors are of course the clean facilities we have which enable us to even control the air quality at the production area.

  2. I also recently stopped taking all “on-the-shelf” bread because of preservatives such as E282. So, there is not any form of propionic acid and propionates used as preservatives (E280-283) in your bread, especially calcium propionate?.

    • Hi Nic,
      As you have pointed out, calcium propionate is commonly used by wholesale bakeries worldwide for their ‘on-the-shelf’ bread. At Gardenia, we have replaced calcium propionate with natural ingredients such as raisin juice concentrate and vinegar.
      Just to let you know, the shelf-life of Gardenia sandwich bread is 4 days whilst some brands have 5 days shelf-life. Therefore, with the same expiry dates, Gardenia products are fresher then other on-the-shelf bread brands.

  3. This is admission on your part, that you have been adding either artificial, unnatural or synthetic preservatives until lately. I may want to sue you for the health issues I may have had consuming gardenia bread over the past years.

    • Dear Mr Shelton.
      Calcium propionate is the common preservative used by bakeries worldwide. The allowable usage amount is different from country to country. In Malaysia, the permitted amount is 2,000 parts per million (ppl).

      Gardenia uses ONLY 30% of the permitted amount prior to the launch of our No Artificial Preservatives bread. Now, instead of calcium propionate, we use natural ingredients such as vinegar and raisin juice concentrate. Other wholesale bakeries in Malaysia are still using calcium propionate in they bread.

      The hygienic environment of Gardenia factories contribute to the products shelf-life.

  4. But vinegar is acetic acid, that it is a chemical as well, right?. To produce raisin juice concentrate, no chemicals are used?. I wonder what it is wrong with E-numbers as they are guarantee of what it is in… with naturals..a lot of marketing! For me is a question of education of the population…

    • The vinegar used in Gardenia bread is a natural vineger from sugar fermentation

      Vinegar or acetic acid can be produced both synthetically and by bacterial fermentation. Today, the biological route (natural fermentation) accounts for only about 10 percent of world production but it remains important for vinegar production as many of the world food purity laws stipulate that vinegar used in foods must be of biological origin. About 75 percent of acetic acid made for use in the chemical industry is made by methanol carbonylation, a chemical synthesis.

      The Raisin Juice Concentrate is a water extract of Natural Seedless Raisins. This product is obtained by leaching the natural, water soluble components out of the raisin through a ‘stewing’ process. The solution is then introduced to a vacuum concentrator to obtain an extract. Raisin Juice Concentrate in Gardenia bread is all natural and it is shelf-stable without additives or preservatives.

  5. May I know what are the calcium salts stated in the ingredients? Can you please list out? As far as I know, one of the preservatives used in other breads is calcium propionate which is also a form of calcium salt.

      We do not use calcium propionate in our bread.

      The calcium salts use to enrich our bread are the combination of permitted minerals (eg Calcium Phosphate) as specified in table I to the Twelfth Schedule of the Malaysian Food Regulation 1985.

  6. Its great to know the bread now using more natural ingredients. But can i know if all the ingredients used not from animals or any animal extracts? If all vegetarian suitable to eat the bread? Thanks.

      All Gardenia sliced bread are suitable for vegetarians. Apart from milk, we do not use any animal base ingredients. As to the other products (eg Buns, Waffles), please refer to the ingredients list printed on the packaging because some products have eggs as one of the ingredients.

  8. Saya dah lama makan roti gardenia. Sejak dari org tak sibuk pasal artificial preservatives lagi. Dah macam-macam jenis yang saya makan. Baik dari roti keping dia sampai roti bun dia. Sihat je sampai skrg. Takde paun penyakit. Tapi yang pasti minum arak dan merokok tu ternyata bawa penyakit. Pelik pula sbb kilang Carlsberg tu boleh tahan lama.

  10. What happen to Breakthrough Gardenia Bread? Discontinued and due to what reason? Any replacement for people with diabettes like me?

      For your information, the company had discontinued production of Gardenia’s Breakthru Bread. We had been receiving overwhelming request from consumers and professional nutritionist for a low GI bread that is at a lower and more affordable price.
      There are 3 products with Low GI, that is:
      - Gardenia 100% WholeGrain with Canadian Purple Wheat (GI value – 46)
      - Gardenia Sommerset Cottage (GI value – 52)
      - Gardenia 100% WholeGrain ( GI value – 55)
      Apart from having low GI value, our 100% WholeGrain with Canadian Purple Wheat has also high anti oxidant.

      Thank you for your interest in our product. For your information, Gardenia Squiggles do not contain eggs. It contains milk and component of milk. Please check the product packaging for more info on the list of ingredients and contents.

  11. Does your bread contain any trace of “azodicarbonamide” or “dough conditioner” which has been known to cause allergic reactions in those sensitive to other azo compounds, such as food dyes?
    The consumption of azodicarbonamide may also heighten an allergic reaction to other ingredients in a food. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive has identified azodicarbonamide as a respiratory sensitizer (a possible cause of asthma) and has determined that these products should be labeled with the words “may cause sensitization by inhalation.”

    I believe you are aware that subway has been using a hardening agent that is commonly used to make yoga mat’s and shoes. By any chance are you guys also using the same form of chemical for the bread hardening?

    Do you deliver your Canadian Purple Wheat daily? Most of the times it is not replenished on a timely basis to the petrol stations and 7-11s’ in Taman Perling , Johor Bahru. The leftovers on the shelf are either nearly expired or just expired while other type of breads are still available.

  16. Despite the many options of low GI Gardenia bread, I wish Gardenia would bring its Breakthru back in the market. It was one of my staple when I started to shed some weight back then in 2008, 2009. For now, I am happy with the Canadian Purple Wheat but Breakthru will always be my number 1 choice.

      We would like to share that The Ministry Of Health’s Food Act 1983 and The Nutrition Labelling and Claims, requires 4 items to be listed in the nutrition facts list, that is; Energy, Protein, Fat and Carbohydrate.
